Scarface cocked his head to the wind, his right eye foolishly looking into the night, his glorious mane of chocolate-brown hair enveloping his strong neck. With each grunting roar, his flanks heaved, his barrel chest pulling air from deep inside his body to generate an explosion of sound. He came to a halt and listened closely. He could hear the faint noises of his pride-mates in the Musiara Marsh, five kilometers distant, as each joined their voice to the wind. This meeting in 2013, near the Marsh, as the darkness closed in around us, was just one of many unforgettable interactions Angie and I have had with this renowned lion. Scarface, now in his 13th year, is a Maasai Mara National Reserve legend.
Lion of the Masai Mara
Scarface or Scar (June 11, 2007 – June 11, 2021) was a male lion from Kenya's Masai Mara. He was often referred to as the "World's Most Famous Lion." [1] He was given the name after injuring his right eye in a battle for Marsh Pride territory. Scar won the Marsh Pride in 2012 alongside his brothers Sikio, Hunter, and Morani. [2] [3]
Scarface, fare thee well: This week, we said farewell to Scarface, the most popular lion in the Maasai Mara. Scarface, the oldest lion in the Maasai Mara, was well-known for his scar across his eye. Scarface died at the age of 14; he died calmly at 1pm in Mosiara, surrounded by a handful of wildlife employees who were there to soothe him. Scarface, the lion named for his renowned scar, died on June 11, 2021, and he will be sorely regretted by the whole wildlife community, both local and worldwide. According to reports from Kenya Wildlife Services and the World Heritage Species, the lion died of natural causes. In a statement posted on June 11th on their social media page, the World Heritage Species said that the lion died of natural causes. We are so saddened to inform that the iconic Scarface died today of natural causes in his beloved Mara home.
"His presence also aided the local Maasai community that profit from ecotourism," he said. "Having experienced the excitement of seeing Scarface a few years ago, I can appreciate personally how his peculiar look fascinated the numerous visitors who came to see him." The African Conservation Foundation's director of conservation, Arend de Haas, also lamented the lion's death.

Scarface even had a Facebook page devoted to himself. For wildlife photographers who believe in bucket lists, seeing Scarface may put a lot of valuable sightings in the shadows. With his untamed, windswept mane, a large patch of black hair implying greater virility and an enduring position among his peers, a notably thunderous scream, and an obvious swagger that reminds one of the other Scarface, portrayed by a rowdy Al Pacino in the Brian de Palma film. The wildlife world will undoubtedly mourn the iconic lion's presence, as well as the tremendous influence he has had on Kenya's transformation into a wildlife and safari lover's holy grail. The king must reign indefinitely.

We were hoping for the Lion to turn around so we could photograph him facing the camera, and I captured this image as he was slowly turning around to face us. When he finally turned to face us, we observed a significant scar along the right side of his face. Our tour guide said that the Scar-faced King got his moniker from the scar on his face. We chose it as the featured image (first image) for this article. Soon after, the Lion opted to sleep, and we captured this last photograph of him napping before returning to the lodge.
Scarface and his three brothers Morai, Hunter, and Sikio ruled the regions along the Mara River for many years, especially around the Malaika and Ashnil camps. Scarface, Sikio, and Morai have been in charge for the previous three years, after the death of Hunter. Scarface was well-known for his bad behavior, but he was also a captivating figure who drew a lot of attention to his cult. He possessed a distinct untamed mane with a patch of black and a powerful roar that set him apart from his friends.

Scarface died around 1pm local time, according to the Mara Predator Conservation Programme on Facebook. He died peacefully, away from the truck and the hyenas. We were the lone car on the scene and stood by his side, attempting to provide some solace. They went on to say, "The Mara has lost another another of its great iconic guys." May his legacy live on in perpetuity.
"Scarface has been observed limping for the last four years. There are no apparent scars or injuries, but I believe he is just aging and his earlier injuries are catching up with him "Tira, co-owner of Matira bush camp with Monika Braun, remarked before. Scarface died only days after a video of a fearful lion in the Maasai Mara went viral for being afraid of buffalos.
Another of the Mara's great iconic males has died. May his legacy live on in perpetuity. This will be my present to you: when you look up at night in the sky, because I'll be living on one of them, and since I'll be laughing on one of them, it will seem to you as if all the stars are smiling. Scarface the Iconic
As far as male lion coalitions are concerned, change is constantly blowing across the Mara Triangle; old coalitions pass and go, to be replaced by younger, stronger men within their territories, which is a normal way of life. If you are interested in Africa, you may remain addicted to the wild moments with our well-planned safaris to Masai Mara to enjoy a close-up encounter with Masai Mara's lions on a private safari.
Goodbye, my buddy. I'm pleased I got to know you. I've had the pleasure of meeting you out on the plains many times over the years, and I've loved every minute of it. You were an exceptional Male Lion, an icon, a legend, a Kenyan and Maasai Mara ambassador. You've seen it everything, the good, the terrible, and the ugly of life as a genuine Wild Lion. I applaud you! Scar died today at 1 p.m., according to the Mara Predator Conservation Programme. He died quietly, free of fear and anguish. After more than 13 years of roving the Mara and over ten years as a successful Pride Male, his time had come. A Legend has died in the Mara.
