The chandelier sequence was done utilizing stop motion to keep the actors below safe, according to chief cinematographer Charles Van Enger, A.S.C. According to at least one Internet report, it was done in reverse, with the chandelier being pulled upward and then produced backward in the lab. Van Enger's description may be found in Philip J. Riley's excellent book The Phantom of the Opera (Hollywood Archives Series) (v. 1), therefore I'm inclined to accept it. His red cloak was hand-painted in this scene. The sole print of the scene that has survived is now in black and white.
